The development of IT technology is advancing by leaps and bounds, and humanity already has artificial intelligence that greatly assists in various fields. But fraudsters find their own use for it, using it to:
- commit monetary thefts,
- steal confidential data;
- commit forgeries;
- generate voices and appearances of different people;
- imitate behavior.
To influence the victim and gain access to the information they need. The main goal of such fraud is personal enrichment at someone else's expense.
Deepfake Fraud
Before understanding deepfake fraud, you need to understand what it is. A deepfake is one of the negative traits of artificial intelligence, replicating the characteristics of a person. Such as appearance, voice, which artificial intelligence generated.
This method is often used by unscrupulous advertisers to create various commercials. It is also used to create greetings supposedly from famous personalities.
Fraudsters have learned to use artificial intelligence technologies well, creating deceptive videos and photos for blackmail or extracting data. Criminals also often create audio deepfakes that imitate the voices of acquaintances, friends, or relatives. They call the victim and, in the voice of a familiar person, ask for money transfers or to disclose confidential information. Most of the data for creating audio fakes is collected by fraudsters from the internet, social networks, and other various sources.
By also creating fake images, fraudsters aim to use a generated photo to conduct identification for logging into social media accounts or banking. Or they create fake photos for blackmail in a compromising situation.
Fake Videos
Cases of fraudsters creating fake videos have become frequent, which can affect both large companies and ordinary people, as well as famous personalities. Video deepfakes are used in various directions, videos are created where:
- relatives or friends ask for financial help and to transfer money to an agreed account;
- advertisements for fake companies are generated featuring famous personalities;
- fake information is spread in the news to misinform the public;
- materials containing compromising content, such as offensive statements or intimate scenes, are often generated, mostly used for blackmail and extorting money.
If you look closely at such videos, you can definitely spot some details, they reveal the implausibility of the video, and you can orient yourself that it was created using artificial intelligence. These can be:
- unnatural human movements;
- lack of blinking movements of the eyes;
- unnatural facial expressions;
- absence of various facial reactions;
- unnaturally falling shadows;
- insufficiently detailed small details;
- absence of clear contours.
Financial Crimes
Using deepfakes, fraudsters have learned to commit major financial crimes targeting well-known corporations and large firms. Fraudsters can use a deepfake to convince employees of large banks or corporations to transfer large sums of money. For this, they use created videos of corporate executives.
A financial department employee is specifically chosen who has broad authority and can make large transfers. Thanks to artificial intelligence, fraudsters make a video call, use deepfake technology, posing as the company's executive, in very realistic conditions and with a natural voice. Consequently, the employee believes the authenticity of the call and fulfills the director's request to make the transfer.
Many such cases of financial fraud have been recorded worldwide, and more and more people are falling victim to modern IT technologies.
New Scam Technologies
Using deception in various areas, deepfakes with individual faces are very often encountered, where relatives ask for financial help, which does not always work because there is an opportunity to call back, think it over, and make a decision.
Fraudsters have increasingly been using videos that allow them to earn substantial money. As they say, made to order, of a political nature. Here, a video file is created using artificial intelligence, containing compromising material, and posted, for example, on social networks. Just one such video is enough to ruin a political figure's career, even if it is proven fake, the reputation is still tarnished.
Deepfakes have become quite a promising income source for fraudsters, so their danger should not be underestimated. Scammers constantly come up with new schemes with deepfakes, actively using artificial intelligence to create fake photos and videos.
One should be cautious and not immediately believe the information received; if there is an opportunity to verify it, it is better to take advantage of it.
